Williamson, who was appointed last week after Mark Wright paid the price for a poor season that culminated in an 18th-place finish, insists the side can and will perform better if they get a solid start to the campaign.

He told the club’s official website: ‘I don’t think any club in League Two can say they are going in to a season just to consolidate. Every club wants to win promotion from this division and every club is capable of doing that, depending on how they go about their business.

‘Everyone in League Two has got to have ambition and drive to get out of the division. I have had a look at the players I’ve got at my disposal and I feel they are capable. We’ve got to get off to a good start.’
