As we prepare for Chester’s visit to Darlington in League Two, we roll back the years to 1973 and happier years for Chester supporters.

The date is the 22nd September, 1973 and Chester run out 2-1 winners over Darlington at their old Feethams ground.

For Chester, Chris Dunleavy made his debut in this game as the Seals totally outclassed Darlington on a rain soaked pitch. City opened the scoring after just twenty minutes when a powerful header by James beat Morritt.

Entertaining as City were, they failed to capitalise on their superiority.

Draper rattled both the bar and the post with powerful header’s but his reward came when he laid on the second in the 70th minute – Morritt pushed out a shot to Draper whose low cross slithered between the goalkeepers hands to James only a few feet out.

Dunleavy was harshly adjudged to have fouled Holbrook for an 80th minute penalty and Sproates reduced the arrears.
