The Dragons went down to a damaging fourth straight defeat, losing 2-1 at bitter rivals Chester on Wednesday, leaving them five points adrift of the top seven.

Smith said: ‘People will look at this result and the players will get slaughtered by the fans.

‘That is four defeats in a row for us – our first bad run of the season. These are games we should not be losing.

‘We are still in with an outside chance of the play-offs, but we’ll have to improve over the next five games.’

Meanwhile, Dragons defender Dennis Lawrence has been included in Trinidad and Tobago’s provisional 24-man squad for this summer’s World Cup finals.
