City have received more than 20 applications for the job, vacated by Mark Wright just over a week ago, with a shortlist of five to be made and three candidates to be interviewed this week.

With the vast majority of the squad contracted for next season, Vaughan, who is not likely to take any more applications beyond Tuesday, accepts it will not be an easy job for the new man.

Vaughan said: ‘There’s been a lot of interest but we’ve got to make the right decision. We’ve had three horrendous seasons since we came back in the league – 22nd, 15th and 18th – and each year we’ve invested to be in the play-offs.

‘We’re going to get someone who is capable of making that a reality this year. Whoever takes over is going to inherit about 90% of the squad.

‘There’s a lot of work to be done over the next few weeks.’
